When Should I Upgrade My Air Conditioner? 6 Clear Signs
As summer heat rolls in, your air conditioner becomes one of the most important systems in your home. But how do you know when to stop repairing the one you have and upgrade instead? Here are six clear signs it is time to replace.
1. Your AC Is Over 10–15 Years Old
Most air conditioners last 10 to 15 years. Past that, efficiency drops sharply and breakdowns become more likely. Even with good maintenance, an old unit can’t match the performance or energy savings of a modern one.
Tip: check the manufacture date on the metal nameplate near the condenser. Over a decade old? Start planning. Our guide on how long an AC really lasts covers what to expect.
2. You Are Facing Frequent Repairs
Calling the technician more than once a season adds up fast, especially when you are replacing expensive parts like compressors or coils.
Rule of thumb: when repair costs approach 50% of the price of a new unit, replacement is the smarter move.
3. Your Energy Bills Keep Creeping Up
Older units are far less efficient, particularly those built before modern SEER2 standards. If your hydro bills rise year over year for the same cooling, the AC is a prime suspect. A new high-efficiency system can cut cooling costs significantly — our SEER2 guide explains how the ratings work.
4. Your Home Feels Humid or Cools Unevenly
Hot rooms, cold rooms, or sticky indoor humidity all point to a system struggling to do its job — often an issue of size or worn components. Modern systems with variable-speed fans control humidity far better. (Note that an oversized unit causes humidity problems too — see why right-sizing matters.)
5. Your AC Uses R-22 Refrigerant
R-22 (often called Freon) was phased out for environmental reasons, and it is now expensive and hard to source. If your system still uses it, any repair involving a recharge will hurt your wallet. Newer systems use lower-impact refrigerants — and as of 2025 new equipment in Canada uses low-GWP options like R-32 and R-454B. Our refrigerant transition guide explains what that means for buyers.
6. You Are Renovating or Selling Soon
If you are remodelling or listing your home, a new high-efficiency AC complements the upgrade, boosts resale appeal, and reassures buyers.
Making the Call
The takeaway: if your unit is 10+ years old, needs frequent repairs, uses R-22, or leaves your home humid and uneven, replacement usually beats another repair bill.
