Year-Round HVAC Services in Toronto and the GTA: A Homeowner's Guide
Living in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area means your home comfort systems work hard in every season — through freezing January mornings and humid July afternoons alike. Keeping that comfort reliable, efficient, and affordable comes down to choosing the right equipment and a trustworthy installer. Here is a homeowner’s overview of HVAC in the GTA and how to plan an upgrade.
Heating and Cooling for the GTA Climate
The GTA’s mix of cold winters and humid summers shapes every equipment decision. Here is how the main systems fit:
Furnace installation and replacement
A high-efficiency furnace is still the most common choice for GTA homes on natural gas. Modern units reach up to 96% AFUE, turning nearly all their fuel into usable heat. Our guide on whether a 96% AFUE furnace is worth it covers the payback math.
AC and central air
A modern, high-SEER2 air conditioner keeps your home cool while keeping hydro bills in check. Correct sizing matters more than raw power — see why an oversized AC costs you comfort.
Heat pump installation
A cold-climate heat pump heats and cools in one efficient system and can qualify for substantial Ontario rebates. Wondering if it holds up here? Our Toronto climate guide and the cold-winter data make the case.
Water heater installation
From reliable tanks to endless-hot-water tankless and efficient heat pump models, there is a right fit for every home. Compare them in our tank vs. tankless guide.
Current Rebates (Updated for 2026)
Here is an important correction to older information you may have seen: the federal Canada Greener Homes Grant has closed to new applications. The live pathway for Ontario homeowners is now the Home Renovation Savings Program, delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy (IESO), where heat pumps qualify for up to $12,000. Oil-heated homes can access even more through the OHPA program — up to $25,000 in Ontario.
We keep the full, current picture in our Ontario heat pump rebate guide. If your project budget assumed the old federal grant, it is worth revisiting.
