Heat Pumps

Heat Pump vs. Air Conditioner: What's Better for GTA Homeowners?

When it comes to cooling a home in the Greater Toronto Area, most homeowners choose between a central air conditioner and a heat pump. Both cool reliably, but they are not the same — and the right pick depends on your climate, energy costs, and heating needs. Here is how they compare.

How They Work

  • Air conditioner (AC): cools your home by moving heat from inside to outside. It is a one-way system — it cools, and that is all.
  • Heat pump: does the same cooling job in summer, but can reverse the process to heat your home in winter. It moves heat in or out depending on the season.

Which Makes More Sense in the GTA?

1. Year-round use

A heat pump heats and cools — a real advantage in the GTA, where we get hot summers and cold (but not extreme) winters. Choose a plain AC and you still need a separate furnace for winter.

Edge: heat pump, if you want an all-in-one system.

2. Efficiency and cost savings

Heat pumps are very efficient, especially in mild spring and fall weather, and running on electricity they can save money if you are switching from oil or propane. Modern cold-climate models hold up in deep cold too — NRCan field testing shows a properly specced unit keeping a COP near 2.0 even at -25°C, well below a typical Toronto winter low. Our cold-winter data guide has the numbers. A high-efficiency AC paired with a gas furnace can still keep bills reasonable.

Edge: heat pump, especially if you lean electric or want to cut your footprint.

3. Installation and maintenance

Heat pumps cost more upfront because of the added heating function, but rebates can offset that — see our Ontario rebate guide. ACs are cheaper to install and simpler to maintain, but remember you are also maintaining a separate furnace.

Edge: a tie — heat pumps cost more upfront but can save over time; ACs are cheaper but only cover one season.

4. Environmental impact

Heat pumps transfer heat rather than generate it, and with about 84% of Ontario’s 2024 grid electricity produced without emissions, they are one of the greenest comfort options here. An AC paired with a gas furnace carries a higher overall footprint.

Edge: heat pump, clearly.

So Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose a heat pump if you want one system for year-round comfort, are interested in energy savings, or want to take advantage of rebates and lower-carbon heating.
  • Choose an AC if you already have a reliable gas furnace, are mainly focused on summer cooling, and want a lower upfront cost.

Worried about the old gas-vs-heat-pump tax math? Note that the consumer carbon charge was removed in 2025 — our carbon tax explainer reframes the decision around efficiency instead.

The takeaway: for the GTA’s cold-but-not-extreme winters and humid summers, a cold-climate heat pump is often the smarter, more efficient, all-in-one choice — but a high-efficiency AC plus furnace remains a solid, lower-upfront option.
