How to Get an Accurate HVAC Quote in the GTA (Without the Guesswork)
Shopping for a new furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, or water heater starts with one thing: a clear, accurate quote. But not all quotes are equal — a real estimate should reflect your specific home, not a number pulled from a price list. Here is how to get a quote you can actually trust, and what to look for before you sign anything.
Virtual vs. In-Home Estimates
Both have their place, and good HVAC companies offer both.
- Virtual estimate. You share a few details and photos of your home and current setup, then review options with a technician over video. It is fast, convenient, and a great way to scope a project and get ballpark pricing without a site visit.
- In-home estimate. A technician inspects your space in person. This is the gold standard for complex jobs — fuel-type changes, ductwork modifications, or anything where exact measurements matter.
For a straightforward like-for-like replacement, a virtual quote is often enough. For a bigger change, an in-home visit protects you from surprises.
What a Proper Quote Should Include
A trustworthy HVAC quote isn’t just a single price. It should spell out:
- Equipment — the exact make, model, size, and efficiency rating (look for SEER2/HSPF2 on cooling and heat pumps, AFUE on furnaces)
- A sizing basis — ideally a real load calculation, not just matching your old unit’s tonnage
- Labour and installation — what is included, from removal and disposal to connections and testing
- Permits and inspections where applicable
- Warranty terms for both parts and labour
- Rebate guidance for current Ontario programs
If a quote is vague on any of these, ask. Our explainer on why correct sizing matters shows why that load calculation is more than a formality.
Questions Worth Asking
- Are your technicians ESA and TSSA certified? (In Ontario, gas and electrical work legally requires it — see our guide on ESA and TSSA requirements.)
- Is the unit properly sized for my home, or matched to the old one?
- What rebates am I eligible for through the Home Renovation Savings Program?
- What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
Don’t Forget Rebates
Current Ontario incentives flow through the Home Renovation Savings Program (Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy), with heat pumps qualifying for up to about $12,000. The older federal Canada Greener Homes Grant has closed to new applications, so a good contractor should be pointing you to the live provincial program — and helping with the paperwork.
The takeaway: a real HVAC quote is itemized, sized to your home, certified, warrantied, and rebate-aware. Anything less is a guess.
